Evaluation and Treatment of Musculoskeletal Vascular Anomalies in Children: An Update and Summary for Orthopaedic Surgeons
نویسنده
چکیده
The majority of vascular anomalies can be categorized as either hemangiomas or vascular malformations. Hemangiomas are the most common benign soft tissue tumors of childhood, occurring in 4%–10% of children [16]. Vascular malformations represent a separate group of congenital vascular anomalies. Both hemangiomas and vascular malformations are often located deep to the deep fascia in the trunk and extremities of children and can present with signs and symptoms similar to that of malignant soft tissue tumors such as rabdomyosarcomas. Given the high prevalence of vascular anomalies in the pediatric population, and the need to distinguish them quickly and accurately from other soft tissue tumors, any orthopaedic surgeon treating children must have a solid understanding of the presentation, diagnosis, and prognosis of hemangiomas and vascular malformations. Confusion still exists in the literature and among clinicians about classification and treatment of these vascular anomalies. The biological classification system proposed by Mulliken and Glowacki [17] offers a simple and effective means of evaluating and diagnosing children with vascular anomalies and aids in the formulation of appropriate treatment plans.

How do Orthopedic Surgeons Address Psychological Aspects of Illness?
Background: Orthopaedic surgeons have a pivotal role in transitioning the care of orthopedic patients from a biomedical to a biopsychosocial model. In an effort to foster this transition, we designed a study aimed to determine surgeons’ attitudes and practice of noticing, screening, discussing psychological illness with patients, as well as making referrals to address psychosocial issues in ...

Healthcare is expensive and often inaccessible to many. As a result, surgeons must consider simple, less expensiveinterventions when possible. For wound care, an older but quite effective cleaning agent is Dakin’s solution (0.5%sodium hypochlorite), an easily made mixture of 100 milliliters (ml) bleach with 8 teaspoons (tsp) baking soda into agallon of clean water or 25 ml ble...
متن کاملRadiographic Predictors for Short-term Functional Outcome after Radial Head Arthroplasty in Patients with Persistent Symptoms after Treatment for Radial Head
Background: Evaluation of the accurate position after radial head arthroplasty remains a challenge for surgeons.Standard radiographs are used to evaluate the position of the implant, however, results regarding radiographicdeficiencies on clinical outcome are not consistent. In this retrospective study our main aim was to determine if subtleradiographic deficiencies after radia...
متن کاملCongenital Deformities of the Upper Extremity.
Congenital deformities of the upper extremity are rare. They are often associated with other, more severe disorders of the cardiovascular, craniofacial, neurologic, and musculoskeletal systems. Most upper-extremity congenital anomalies are minor and cause no functional deficits, and surgical reconstruction is therefore unnecessary. If a severe cosmetic deformity is present or there is significa...
متن کاملUse of Oral Sirolimus in Paediatric Patients with Serious Vascular Anomalies: Case Report
Background Pediatric vascular anomalies comprise a heterogeneous group of clinical disorders of varying severity. These anomalies are divided into vascular tumors or vascular malformations. Different therapeutic strategies have been used depending on the pathology in question. In recent years, mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) inhibitors have been explored as a therapeutic option in patients...
